Why I Blog

Thursday, July 9, 2009

I thought it would be nice to explain why I do this blog. I started with my business website first, LearningFelt. I started my business because my son loves felt boards. I have information on the site about autism, but it wasn't enough. I felt limited in what I could share and how I could help others. That is why I started AutismLearningFelt.

Here, I can share information about everything. I can review products, do giveaways and write up posts on any aspect of autism and being a mom. I love it. It is my hope that the information I share will help at least one person. My favorite thing about reviews is that I can check out an item from the perspective of a mom with an autistic child, a mom of a "typical" child, and a mom. I know, from personal experience, that parents of an autistic child have to be very careful about what they purchase for their child. Reading a review of the item can help them decide if it is right for their child. I also know that moms are usually the ones that go without, and doing reviews of mom related items and offering giveaways for mom is my way acknowledging the importance of taking care of mom.

I don't mean to neglect dad. Dad is often the unsung hero in the family. I would love the opportunity to offer more items geared to daddy. I was lucky to have a couple of items for Father's Day. I am also been putting out requests for camping and outdoor equiptment. My son loves the outdoors, but has never been camping. He really wants to do this and my husband and I have started buying camping supplies, an item at a time. It is my hope to have everything we need by next summer to go camping. Unless, someone representing a camping/outdoor company reads this post and wants to help out and have me do a review/giveaway for their products. How many of my readers would love a chance to win a big giveaway for camping/outdoor equiptment?

I have read remarkable comments on my posts. I do read all of them. Comments from my readers let me know that my blog is reaching people. Comments let me know what I should be focusing on and that I might be making a small difference. If you are reading this, please leave a comment. Let me know what you think.

If any PR people are reading this, please feel free to contact me with any questions or pitches. I am also available for any blogger events that you are running and would like to sponsor me for. I enjoy reviewing all kinds of products and coming up with ideas on how the item can benefit children with special needs and their families. There are a lot of products most people do not even think about as being beneficial. Items like laminators, contact paper, printers, computers, paper, posters, velcro, and cameras are necesities in my house. Ice packs and coolers, backpacks and ziplock bags are important, too. When you have a picky eater, packing food for a day trip is commonplace for us. We take trips, stay at hotels, eat out at restaraunts and go to museums. We do everything and adapt our environment and products we buy at the store to meet our families, especially our son's, needs.

I really love your story. I'd like to know more about Felt boards and how that helps with autistic children. My son has aspergers and I've been writing some crafting articles about activites I do with both my children on handmadenews.org , focusing on one's that help my son with sensory and impact pressure. I would love to write an article about your story and your felt boards for Handmadenews.org if you'd be interested.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to research all that you have on your sites, namely the felt products you offer. Then, I'll email you some questions. I'd really love to share your story. Thanks again!

I really love your story of why I blog. Your right it's nice to hear reviews of something that is specifically for an autistic child. Not to say that I don't like reviews. I love it. I also love learning more about autism as there is never enough to know and it's nice with hearing the experience.

I think the work you do, your blog and everything are great. It's interesting how our life situations change or start something.
