Suggestions For Brain Training At Home

Thursday, April 1, 2010

To make cognitive gains, a person has to work at a task intensely. This might mean doing a more complex task than usual, or doing a familiar task more quickly. One important key is concerted effort – good old hard work. We find that working on multiple skills in one session (logic/reasoning, processing speed and auditory skills, for example) is more effective than working only one area.
Here are some ideas that could benefit your child:

o Write down a list of tasks your child can do. Alter these tasks to make them slightly more challenging. If your daughter can count to 100 by ones, for example, can she count that high by 2’s and 3’s? Could she count by 2’s and 3’s to 100 even if her starting point is a random number (say, 34 or 58)?

o Is your child able to sustain his performance at a task if he has another task to do at the same time? An example would be coloring while you ask for the answer to a simple math problem. Try combining easy activities to give your child a new challenge.

o Target both visual and auditory attention. To boost auditory attention, listen together for particular sounds or words in stories, CDs, or online recordings. To enhance visual attention, scan for hidden objects in photos or puzzles, look for targeted letters and words in narratives. Another pattern activity is to figure out what is missing in categories where there is a pattern (all red, all things you find under the sea, all letters are capitalized)

o Talk with your child about things that “go together” during your daily routine. For instance, rapidly name the items you will need for the table at dinner time (plates, napkins, forks, knives, spoons, glasses, salt, and pepper). If you are in a carpool line, naming types of transportation or automakers is a quick organizational task. This exercise helps your child see patterns and cluster similar objects.

Learning means exposure to new things. That exposure results in new synapses, greater retention of brain cells, additional neuronal networks and greater brain density. We obtain the most synapses when we work on a novel task at a challenging level, but below the level of frustration.

The new pathways will bring greater ability to demonstrate new skills. Experiment and see what your child can learn.

Bathroom Organizers From MagnaPods

Monday, March 1, 2010

I like organizational products that are practical. MagnaPods sent me two of their bathroom organizational products to review and keep. The first one is the Magnetic Tooth Brush Holder and the second is the Magnetic Cosmetic Organizers. These are designed for you to place on the inside of your medicine cabinet. The cosmetic holder holds little things. The little things that you are usually hunting around for in a drawer. The Toothbrush Holder is a nice way to conceal your toothbrush from visitors or one last thing you have to store on your bathroom countertop or in a drawer.

There’s one little problem. I don’t have a medicine cabinet. I wasn’t going to let that stop me from putting these little organizers to good use. I found another place that they work just as well. My freezer door. They adhere easily to the door, thanks to the magnetic strip on the back. I can easily move them around, as needed. They are clear, so they match with any décor.

I am using my MagnaPods to store the doctor appointment cards for the family. You know, the ones that I am always digging around for in my purse. Now, they are within easy reach whenever I need to check them. I keep the little pocket knife that I am always needing, but don’t like to hunt around for. Of course, I am keeping a couple of pens in them too. My freezer is right next to my wall calendar, and I am always having to hunt down a pen to write something on the calendar. Now, the pen is right there on my freezer door.

I am also using the MagnaPods for storage of little miscellaneous items. Items that need to be kept track of, but aren’t. For example, hair accessories for my daughter. I find them all over the place, yet can never find one when I need to. Now, I can keep a couple in these organizers and always be able to find one when needed. To find out more about these products, please visit MagnaPods.

When Mom Is Dependent On Others

Thursday, February 25, 2010

It has been tough for me this week. I am recovering from my MOHS surgery and the plastic surgery. The ice packs and pain medicine have helped, but I have been almost useless to my family this week.

My husband has had to come home from work, cook and clean the kitchen. He has been doing the laundry. He has made sure the kids have had their baths and any medicines that they need. He has been waiting on me.

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of my husband taking care of all my needs. What has been difficult is not being able to do anything for him and my kids. I love taking care of them. I also feel really bad for my husband, because I can see how tired he is when he gets home from work.

It's not just my husband that has had to go out of their way to help me. I am a Co-Leader for my daughter's Girl Scout Troop. I am also Cookie Manager for the troop. We have a meeting tonight, and I just can not go. My Co-Leader had to come over here to get forms that the moms need to sign for their cookie sales. She also needed to pick up some arts and crafts supplies, since I have them all.

Our Area Cookie Man, (that's not his title, but that's what we call him) is coming over to my house to pick up the first payment for our troop's cookie sales. That is very generous of him to do this.

I feel bad that I have to depend on others this week and next week. I am grateful that I have this help, but it is hard for me to sit back and let someone else do what I should be doing. I go back to the doctor on Monday to have the stitches removed. The doctor told me that it would be about 6 months for a full recovery, though. I'll be happy to just be able to start doing things for myself and my family.

Clutter Clearing Choices Book Giveaway Closed

Sunday, February 21, 2010

I finally finished reading Clutter Clearing Choices, written by Barbara Tako. As I said in a previous post, this book was sent to me to review and keep. I really enjoyed reading this book. I found it to be extremely inspiring. That is why it took me longer to read this book than most books.

I would read a chapter or two and put it down to go tackle a job around the house. Barbara offers practical advice and suggestions in how to not only clear away clutter in your home, but also to clear away clutter in your life. She does this without being preachy or telling you what you have to do to take care of clutter.

The one bit of advice that inspired me the most is to take on small projects. By taking on small projects, I was able to accomplish a lot in a short period of time. Each small task has added up. I organized my closet, dresser, kitchen table, and my kitchen counter.

In the past, I have done this repeatedly. Each time, the clutter would come back. After reading this book, I realized that clearing away the clutter wasn’t enough. I had to have a system in place to prevent it from coming back.

For my kitchen counter, I set up a small organizer for mail, coupons, receipts, and doctor information. I also instructed my husband that junk mail goes in the trash, not on the counter, and not in the organizer. In my bedroom, I took out the laundry basket that I was using to hold my clean clothes next to my dresser. I had plenty of room in my dresser to hold my clean clothes, but it was easier to just place them in the laundry basket.

This of course would lead to me not being able to find a clothing item that I needed several times a week. Now, with the basket out of my room, I take my clean clothes into my bedroom and actually put them away. My kitchen table becomes home to toys, crayons, school papers and other things that I am not sure where to put. Now, I take time every day to clear off the clutter from the table. This is usually done after the kids are asleep, in order to prevent my daughter from seeing what I am throwing away and protesting.

I also make a point of insisting that my daughter take care of any toys or craft projects when she is done with them. I was inspired to do all of these things by reading Clutter Clearing Choices. You can also have the opportunity to be inspired by entering this giveaway to win a copy of Clutter Clearing Choices.

One Sick Plus Girl Scout Cookies Equals Dead Battery

Monday, February 15, 2010

It has been a crazy weekend. My son did good recovering from his biopsy, but came down with a stomach bug. At first, I thought it was a complication from the procedure. He was vomiting. A lot. I called the Pediatric Surgeon on call at the hospital that he had the biopsy done, and he didn’t think it was related. He thought it could be the pain medicine or a stomach bug. My little boy didn’t start getting sick until Thursday evening and the procedure was Tuesday.

Of course, I had to leave a message for the doctor and he called me back at 4:30AM. I was not happy to be woken up at that time, especially since I had stayed up late waiting for him to call. I was relieved that it wasn’t a complication of the biopsy. I took my son off the pain medicine, but that didn’t help. It was a stomach bug.

It has been tough on my little boy. He would be really hungry and eat a little bit, then it would come back up. It got to the point that he refused to eat anything. Slowly, with crackers, sprite and sympathy, my little boy started to get better. By Sunday, he was eating and drinking again. So far, no one else in the family shows signs of having caught his stomach bug.

I also had to deliver Girl Scout cookies to the moms in my daughter’s troop on Saturday. Of course, it snowed Friday night. One of the moms didn’t show up and I haven’t been able to get hold of her. Sunday was Cookie Booth day for our little troop. It actually turned out to be a pleasant experience. We didn’t sell as many as we had hoped, but the girls had a great time.

I managed to piss my husband off by hogging the computer to play Evony. He really hates the game. He thinks I spend too much time on it. He’s probably right, but I enjoy it. He watched racing all weekend, except for when I had to call him to come get me because the battery in the truck died. At least we received our tax refund money Friday, so we had the $100 it took to buy a new one.

I have several reviews that I need to get working on this week and I still need to finish the book I am reading. Did I mention how sore I am from moving cases of cookies from place to place? Bayer has become my new best friend. That was my weekend. How was yours?

All Natural Products For Bath and Body

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

I was given the opportunity to review and keep (Seed)+ Restful Lavender Sage Nourishing Body Lotion, Moisturizing Body Soap and Conditioning Hair Shampoo Bar. (Seed)+ also carries these products in Invigorating Citrus Thyme and Unscented. All of their products are available for purchase on Amazon.com.

I have sensitive skin and I have allergies to heavy fragrances. My son is the same way. I tried these products out first, before letting my children use them. My daughter doesn’t have any allergies and loves using the lotion. I, on the other hand, found that the Restful Lavender Sage Lotion has too strong a fragrance for me. I think Simply Unscented may have been a better choice for me to try. My daughter doesn’t have a problem with it.

The Moisturizing Body Soap and Conditioning Hair Shampoo Bar in the Restful Lavender Sage scent are different. They are lightly scented and I didn’t have a problem with my allergies. I had never used a bar shampoo before, and was intrigued by this particular item. It is great. It doesn’t take much to lather up and clean your hair. After a couple weeks of using it, I noticed that my hair was healthier looking. I am now hooked on this bar shampoo.

(Seed)+ is 100% Natural and is not tested on animals. They do not use artificial colors or synthetic preservatives. These things are important for me in a product.

“grape seed enriched body care
In our search for the most potent ingredients to enhance your daily body care ritual, we found the answer inside a tiny seed. How ironic. A grape seed is an amazing source of powerful antioxidants! We enhanced our grape seed oil enriched formulas using all natural ingredients – so your body can feel the power of nature. Enrich yourself with Seed now, and be at your natural best for a long time to come.”

I have been using the soap and shampoo for a couple of weeks now and love them. I have also let both of my children use them. They are gentle on their skin and both of them enjoy using (Seed)+. My daughter is the only one that can use the lotion, though. She is happy with that. She now has her very own lotion. You can visit (Seed)+ for more information about their products.

Getting Rid of Clutter and Organizing Your Home

Monday, February 1, 2010

I am reading the book “Clutter Clearing Choices,” written by Barbara Tako. This book was sent to me to review and keep, and to also do a giveaway. I am having a little trouble with reading this book. Usually, I can read a book quickly. This time, it is taking me a longer.

Why? Because I keep getting inspired to get up and attack clutter in my house. I am a pack rat. I admit it. I hate to throw anything away. This has lead to an accumulation of stuff everywhere. On the kitchen counter, my kitchen table, the living room, bedrooms and, of course, my closets. My biggest problem is that I don’t have a system in place to take care of clutter.

I am always picking up after everyone in my family, and I am tired of it. This has lead to me giving up and letting things just pile up. The first time I sat down to read this book, I read two chapters (the chapters are short, 2 - 4 pages long) and had to put the book down. Off I would go to take some advice given in the book. Here is one of my favorites:

“Start small: Do one drawer or shelf at a time.”

That’s the one that got me motivated to tackle my clutter problem. In the past, I would handle my clutter by tackling a whole room at one time. This was very exhausting. I hated doing it. Afterwards, I would feel good, until a few days would go by and the clutter would start stacking up again. I had no system in place to organize things. It’s great to have my counter cleared off, but it didn’t solve the problem of keeping it that way.

My first clutter and organize task I assigned myself was my kitchen counter. It’s a small space that collects receipts, mail, and other miscellaneous stuff. It took me about 5 minutes to get it cleared off. It wasn’t until the next day that I was able to solve my problem with having an organized way to keep it cleared off.

After reading a few more chapters, I was ready to tackle a problem area in my bedroom. My dresser and the floor in front of my dresser. It was during this task that I found an organizer gathering dust on the floor. I also found an empty container that would be perfect on my counter. The organizer is a small mail/paper/messenger separator, the kind you use in an office. I placed it on the counter to sort appointment cards, important mail, coupons and receipts. I placed the large container on the counter to hold big items, like batteries, that I wanted to keep out where I could get to easily.

The next thing I did was to tell my husband that, for now on, junk mail goes in the trash, not on the counter. Hopefully, this will help. Two days later, and my counter still looks good. I will be doing a full review and a giveaway for this book on February 14. Hopefully, I will be able to complete the book by then. In the meantime, if you have any questions about how to tackle clutter in your home or how to organize a problem area, leave the question in a comment. I will get with the author of the book for answers.
