Comfy Kids

Today our temperatures have proven that winter is indeed here. Our temperature tonight is supposed to get down to 17 degrees. Cold temperatures make us want to dress warmer and more comfy.
Dressing warmer gave me a thought. Are autistic children able to convey their unhappiness with clothing? As a child, I remember wearing uncomfortable clothing because I just wasn't aware that I should let my mother know there was a problem. My family couldn't afford to provide a wide choice of clothing at will. Comfy was not always an option. So even though an item of clothing might not have been comfy, sometimes we had to wear it anyway.
Sometimes a child will balk at wearing certain clothing. The reason could be that a tag is rubbing the neck, that there is something sticking in the jean cloth, that the socks are too thick for the shoes, etc. Not comfy.
Have you had a clothing battle with your child that you can share?

How many of you have actually taken your child out to play in the rain? Most of the time, we are guilty of saying, "No, honey, you'll catch cold. Or, "No, honey, you'll get drenched." Well, it's time to loosen up, Moms. Unless it's freezing cold outside or your child has been ill, get out there with him or her and enjoy the free sprinkler system.
It's funny how we'll pay for water games for our children, then we won't even let them enjoy the free rain nature gives us. It's just water. It will dry and not even leave stains. Lay some thick towels by the door and a quick change of clothes or robes to make it to the bedroom or bathroom to change, and get wet with your child.
Rain can be beautiful. Yet so many times the only response we will give on rain is a negative one. Why? It's like learning to say the glass is half-full instead of half-empty. We must also learn to respect and enjoy nature.
I think we have been programmed by society in general to avoid the rain. How sad. Well, then again, this just gives us homeschool moms another reason to do our own thing, right? So, get out there and do it, moms. Show the world that you won't let the rain get you down.
