Why People Enter or Don't Enter Promotional Giveaways On Blogs

Thursday, July 1, 2010

I hold giveaways on my blog. Some receive a lot of entries, while others don't. I've noticed a pattern with which ones receive high entries vs. those that don't. But there are still some that surprise me.

On my blog, I've noticed that my entries are higher if the main entry is simply to comment as to why they want to win. The ones that make you go to another site and come back tend to have less entries. If the main entry requires multiple things to be done, then the entries are really low.

There are exceptions to these observations. High dollar giveaway items seem to motivate people to work a little harder to enter. A $75 or higher value item seems to attract more people and they are more willing to go to another site and then come back and enter.

Sponsors want to draw attention to their brand and their website. The giveaway draws attention to the brand. The more giveaways the sponsor holds on blogs, the more attention the brand receives. This creates a buzz among consumers. If a sponsor is serious about wanting to generate traffic to their site, immediately, than a higher priced item should be offered as a giveaway prize.

It is my personal opinion that doing one giveaway, on one blog, is not enough to generate interest or website traffic. The average person may see something and think "interesting." Then next time that person sees the item or hears about a brand, "I remember." The third time, "I need to check that out."

Of course, that is just an opinion. I would like to know what you think. How many times do you need to see something, before you want to investigate more? Why do you enter giveaways, and what determines which ones you do or don't enter?

Miss Trimble's Trapdoor Books Review and Giveaway Closed

Thursday, March 4, 2010

I was sent the first two books in a series of children’s books by Lori Jordan-Rice to review and keep. The book s are titled “Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor” and Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor, The Perseverance of Christopher Columbus.” Both books were illustrated by Fox Carlton Hughes.

Most of the children’s books that I read are geared for young children, about the age of my daughter(6 ½). These books are for children around my son’s age, 11 years old this weekend. The main character in the book is a fifth grade boy named Tyler, that is shy, socially awkward, and has trouble paying attention in class.

Because of this, Tyler has his own corner in the classroom that is designated his “quiet place.” This is where he goes, or is sent, when he is having trouble concentrating. When I read this, it reminded me of my son and how he needs a quiet place to work. He is easily distracted. This is also true for a lot of autistic children and for children with other disabilities. However, there was nothing in the book that stated that the character had a disability of any kind. I asked the author what was the inspiration for the main character, if he is based on anyone in particular. She replied, “The main character, Tyler, is based loosely around my own oldest son, who is shy and struggles with self esteem. He is smart, but really needs his own "quiet space" to think and do his best.”

Ms. Jordan-Rice is a former elementary teacher that had become frustrated with the lack of knowledge children were able to demonstrate in the area of history. It seemed that more and more, our children are growing up “historically illiterate - meaning, our kids may not know which country the United States fought to declare its freedom, what explorer discovered America or even who won the battle of the Alamo.” She has written these books to teach history in a manner that will be engaging to young children. Ms. Jordan-Rice says “ The ‘Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor’ series revolves around a fictional classroom full of characters and their daily lives, with an extensive history lesson embedded in each story.”

I did not find this to be true in the first book. To me, the first book was centered on introducing the characters in the book and had a little bit of historical information in it. I felt that this was the best way to write the first book in the series. It gives the reader the opportunity to learn about the characters and to get invested in the story that is being read, and the ones to follow.

The second book does contain an extensive history lesson it. Both stories have important life lessons that are taught, using what has happened in our past (history), to teach the main character how to handle problems he faces in the present. In the first book, “Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor,” Tyler meets Barnabas Bailey, a talking dog that acts as his teacher and guide when Tyler discovers the trapdoor.

Tyler learns an important lesson about friendship and the importance of liking yourself first. In the second book, “Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor The Perseverance of Christopher Columbus,” Tyler learns that you have to work hard, be persistent, and accept failure in order to achieve success. These are great life lessons that children need to learn and understand.

It is my opinion that these books are not just books that your child can read for entertainment. They would be excellent books to use for book reports. They provide opportunities to discuss and relate events in the past to the present. You can use them to challenge your child’s critical thinking and interpretation skills. There soon will be other books in the series available for purchase. I am looking forward to that. For more information about the “Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor” series, please visit www.MissTrimblesTrapdoor.com.

This giveaway is for one autographed copy “Miss Trimble‘s Trapdoor“ and “Miss Trimble‘s Trapdoor The Perseverance of Christopher Columbus.” You must live in the US to enter. This giveaway begins March 4, 2010 and ends March 20, 2010.

Over The Rainbow Book Giveaway Closed

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

One of my favorite movies from my childhood is The Wizard of Oz. I watched it whenever it was on television. I can sing every song in the movie. My favorite song was, and still is, Over The Rainbow. I have tried to introduce the movie to my daughter, but she is still too young to appreciate it.

I was sent a children’s book to review and keep. It is titled Over the Rainbow, paintings are by Eric Puybaret and the music is performed by Grammy Award winner Judy Collins. In the back of the book is a CD of 3 songs, Over The Rainbow is one of them.

The book itself is the song, and it is illustrated with wonderful pictures. The pictures bring the story and song alive in a way that really captures a child’s imagination. Now I can share a part of my childhood love of The Wizard of Oz with my daughter. She has taken to the book and Judy Collins’ beautiful voice.

This giveaway is for one copy of the book Over the Rainbow. You must live in the US to enter. This giveaway begins February 24, 2010 and ends March 10, 2010.

Chidren's Game Pack Giveaway Closed

I was introduced to a great new game. You may have heard of it. It’s called You’ve been Sentenced! This is a great educational game for children 8 years old and up. It comes with five decks of cards and each deck fits into it’s own spot in the box for easy play and storage. You can also buy add-on decks on specific subjects like Sports, Sci-Fi and Pop Culture.

I was sent this game to review with my kids. I was hoping that my son would take to it, but he didn’t. My daughter loved it. Even though she is only 6 ½ years old, she was able to play it with a little bit of help from me. Once she got the hang of it, she was able to come up with some great sentences.

That’s the point of the game. You pick ten cards to start with and you have to use as many of them to create a proper sentence. Each card has five different words on it and each word is assigned a point value. After everyone has made their sentences, the total points are recorded and added up. You can challenge another player’s sentence and it is up to all of the players to judge the authenticity of it.

The sentences that we came up with when playing were hilarious. We would laugh at each other’s sentences and help each other to come up with the craziest ones. You aren’t supposed to help each other, but we did. It made it fun. My daughter has had trouble with how to form a proper sentence and this game is really helping her. My son simply doesn’t like to sit still. Maybe when he is older that will change.

If you are a home school mom, teacher, or therapist, this is a great tool to have in your arsenal. It is fun and educational. My daughter doesn’t see playing it as a learning activity. She just sees it as fun. You’ve Been Sentenced is produced by McNell Designs. You can find more information on products from McNeill Designs on their website.

McNeill Designs also sent me the Wheel of Chore-ture and Twisted Fish. My daughter uses the Wheel of Chore-ture to determine what job she is going to do to earn money. This has become a big hit with the two of us. The Twisted Fish is a card game that is based on the classic Go Fish. The cards are colored and have different fish on them. There are also Zinger cards that allow you to do things like pull a card from another opponent’s hand and look at it or prevent a player from taking a card from you. I enjoy playing this game with my daughter and with the girls in her Girl Scout troop.

This giveaway is for a game pack consisting of 1 You’ve Been Sentenced, 1 Twisted Fish and 1 Wheel of Chore-ture. You must live in the US to enter. This giveaway begins February 23, 2010 and ends March 8, 2010.

Clutter Clearing Choices Book Giveaway Closed

Sunday, February 21, 2010

I finally finished reading Clutter Clearing Choices, written by Barbara Tako. As I said in a previous post, this book was sent to me to review and keep. I really enjoyed reading this book. I found it to be extremely inspiring. That is why it took me longer to read this book than most books.

I would read a chapter or two and put it down to go tackle a job around the house. Barbara offers practical advice and suggestions in how to not only clear away clutter in your home, but also to clear away clutter in your life. She does this without being preachy or telling you what you have to do to take care of clutter.

The one bit of advice that inspired me the most is to take on small projects. By taking on small projects, I was able to accomplish a lot in a short period of time. Each small task has added up. I organized my closet, dresser, kitchen table, and my kitchen counter.

In the past, I have done this repeatedly. Each time, the clutter would come back. After reading this book, I realized that clearing away the clutter wasn’t enough. I had to have a system in place to prevent it from coming back.

For my kitchen counter, I set up a small organizer for mail, coupons, receipts, and doctor information. I also instructed my husband that junk mail goes in the trash, not on the counter, and not in the organizer. In my bedroom, I took out the laundry basket that I was using to hold my clean clothes next to my dresser. I had plenty of room in my dresser to hold my clean clothes, but it was easier to just place them in the laundry basket.

This of course would lead to me not being able to find a clothing item that I needed several times a week. Now, with the basket out of my room, I take my clean clothes into my bedroom and actually put them away. My kitchen table becomes home to toys, crayons, school papers and other things that I am not sure where to put. Now, I take time every day to clear off the clutter from the table. This is usually done after the kids are asleep, in order to prevent my daughter from seeing what I am throwing away and protesting.

I also make a point of insisting that my daughter take care of any toys or craft projects when she is done with them. I was inspired to do all of these things by reading Clutter Clearing Choices. You can also have the opportunity to be inspired by entering this giveaway to win a copy of Clutter Clearing Choices.

This giveaway is for 1 copy of the book Clutter Clearing Choices, written by Barbara Tako.. You must live in the US to enter. This giveaway begins February 20, 2010 and ends March 6, 2010.

Baby BanZ Junior BanZ Sunglasses Giveaway Closed

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Baby BanZ has a line of products for babies and young children. Their main products are sunglasses and goggles that offer 100% UV protection. My daughter has a ton of sunglasses, but none of them actually offer UV protection. She is also breaking them all of the time.

Junior BanZ for Girls
“Features
Lenses 100% UVA/ UVB protection
Category 3 POLARIZED lenses offer high sun glare reduction and good UV protection
Durable polycarbonate Ophthalmic quality
Capable of being replaced with prescription lenses
Frame is made of shatter-resistant polycarbonate
Sporty, sleek design”

Baby BanZ sent me a Junior BanZ for girls to review and keep. It came with it’s own carry case and removable neoprene strap. This isn’t the ideal time of the year to review this type of product, but we did. She wears them in the car. One of her biggest issues, when we are driving, is that the sun keeps getting into her eyes. She has no way to block the sun in the back seat. Wearing the Junior BanZ sunglasses protects her eyes while in the car.

I like the carry case. When she is not wearing her sunglasses, she has something to carry them in. Of course, she has to treat these with more care than her play sunglasses. Fortunately, she is now getting to the age that she can be a little more responsible.

For parents with a baby or toddler, you can try the Baby or KidZ BanZ. They also have a new, Clear Lens Adventure Banz for Special Vision Needs - Baby and Kidz.

“At Baby BanZ, we understand that some little ones need to take special care of their eyes and that our Original Baby Banz sunglasses may just not get the job done. Baby Banz now offers it's Baby and Kidz Banz with clear lenses** that still offer the same great 100% UV and shatter-proof protection that our tinted lenses offer.
We recommend these lenses for children with special needs including: low vision, blindness, Stargardt's Disease, eye injury/surgery recovery and other related eye conditions. In addition, our clear lenses are great for protecting little eyes while participating in outdoor activities/sports and for little ones who need UV protection, but just don't like to wear tinted lenses.
**Please note that these lenses are completely translucent and not made to shade the eye from light in anyway. ”

Baby BanZ is doing a giveaway for one pair of Junior BanZ Sunglasses fo my readers. You must be live in the US to enter. This giveaway begins February 9, 2010 and ends February 27, 2010. You can choose for a boy or girl.

Yo Yo Lip Gloss Giveaway Closed

Thursday, February 4, 2010

I was sent the following YoYo Lipgloss minis to review and keep: Kissable Kiwi, Girly Green Apple, Cha-Cha Chocolate, Big Bounce Bubblegum. These little minis are great for young girls. My daughter loves them. They clip easily to your purse and are attached to a string that you can pull out to use the lip gloss and it retracts back when you are finished.

My daughter and I love this feature. You can always get to the lip gloss, because it is clipped to your purse, instead of in the bottom of your purse. You don’t have to unclip it to use, just pull it to your lips. My daughter likes to use all of them at one time and says they taste like yogurt that way.

I don’t know about that, but since yogurt is one of her favorite things to eat, I think that she was giving it the best compliment that she could. My favorite flavor is the Girly Green Apple, with the Kissable Kiwi coming in a close second. They sell for $2.99 each and are available for purchase on their website.

This giveaway will be for one set of four flavors to one winner. You must be live in the US to enter. This giveaway begins February 4, 2010 and ends February 20, 2010.

Pink Fluffy Lunch Bag Giveaway Closed

Artistic Sensations sent me the cutest lunch bag to review and keep. My daughter fell in love with it instantly. It’s fluffy, pink, and has sparkly gems on one side. The inside is insulated and came with a sports bottle. There are even straps inside to secure the sports bottle.

My daughter insisted that she was going to take her lunch to school the next day and preceded to pack a lunch for herself. The next morning, when we were waiting for the bus, she hugged and petted her lunch box. It really is soft. She told me that she would review it everyday for me. Needless to say, it she loves it, a lot.

Artistic Sensations carries these lunch bags in a variety of styles, including Hello Kitty, Pink Camouflage, and Princess. They also have a wide variety of products available on their website, for children. They have comforters, room décor accessories, wall stickers and much more.

Bright Baby Tees Giveaway Closed

Bright Baby Tees sent me one of their t-shirts to keep and review. They sent me the A B See! T-shirt in blue. Here’s the description:

“A B See! Adult Ring Spun Tee.
A B See! This classic educational tool taken to a new level. Great for infants and toddlers alike. Add a little creativity and you re guaranteed some good fun! Featured on our Adult 100% Organic Cotton Short Sleeve Ring Spun Tee. Pre-shrunk 4.5 oz. 100% certified organic combed ring spun cotton jersey. A great shirt bound for your favorite T-shirt drawer.”

I think that this t-shirt is soft and well made. Having the Alphabet on your shirt is a great way to be able to teach a young child his or her alphabet, no matter where you are. I like this aspect of the t-shirt. I visited their website, and I thought that the picture of this t-shirt did not do it justice. You can’t make out from the picture the objects and animals on and in the letters. It is definitely prettier in person.

Bright Baby Tees makes “comfortable, safe, sustainable, visually stimulating (Infant Visual Stimulation or IVS) organic cotton clothing.” The designs on the shirts are made to stimulate your child’s mind, while being eco-friendly.

This giveaway will be for one A B See! Adult shirt and you must live in the US to enter. This giveaway begins February 4, 2010 and ends February 20, 2010.

Freeze Frame Publishing Photo Book Giveaway Closed

After I did my Valentine’s Gift Guide, Freeze Frame Publishing offered to do a review and giveaway on my blog. They gave me a free Classic photo book, contents designed by me using my pictures, to review and keep. Freeze Frame Publishing allows you to use your own pictures to create photo books, postcards, posters and more.

Once you have downloaded their free software, you can begin working on your project. I enjoyed using their program. It was easy and quick. You have a choice of multiple backgrounds, picture frames, and page templates. You can also use different ones for different pages when creating an book. You are not locked into just on design for the whole book.

For my book, I created a memory book of Christmas past. In fact, I was able to use Christmas 2009 and 2010 in my book. I used two different backgrounds and played around with the different picture frames and page templates. I was able to display about 80 pictures. The Classic photo book pricing starts at $29.99. You can add pages for $1.99 per double sided page. I think that their pricing is very reasonable.

I was excited to open the photo book when it arrived. The book cover is a plain, black, hard cover that has an open square in the middle to view the first picture through. The pages are nicely bound in the book. The printing on the pages are excellent quality. I did find two mistakes, or I should say, my daughter found two mistakes in the book. The pictures I selected for the album are from Christmas of 2008 and 2009. I labeled them 2009 and 2010. Yes, the mistakes were mine. That is why I strongly urge you to take your time when creating your album. Make sure you double check your work before saving and uploading to Freeze Frame.

This giveaway is for one CLASSIC photo book is 20 pages, 8.5" x 11" landscape hardcover book capable of holding 20 to 100 pictures to one winner. You must live in the US to win. This giveaway begins February 4, 2010 and ends February 20, 2010.
