Why People Enter or Don't Enter Promotional Giveaways On Blogs

Thursday, July 1, 2010

I hold giveaways on my blog. Some receive a lot of entries, while others don't. I've noticed a pattern with which ones receive high entries vs. those that don't. But there are still some that surprise me.

On my blog, I've noticed that my entries are higher if the main entry is simply to comment as to why they want to win. The ones that make you go to another site and come back tend to have less entries. If the main entry requires multiple things to be done, then the entries are really low.

There are exceptions to these observations. High dollar giveaway items seem to motivate people to work a little harder to enter. A $75 or higher value item seems to attract more people and they are more willing to go to another site and then come back and enter.

Sponsors want to draw attention to their brand and their website. The giveaway draws attention to the brand. The more giveaways the sponsor holds on blogs, the more attention the brand receives. This creates a buzz among consumers. If a sponsor is serious about wanting to generate traffic to their site, immediately, than a higher priced item should be offered as a giveaway prize.

It is my personal opinion that doing one giveaway, on one blog, is not enough to generate interest or website traffic. The average person may see something and think "interesting." Then next time that person sees the item or hears about a brand, "I remember." The third time, "I need to check that out."

Of course, that is just an opinion. I would like to know what you think. How many times do you need to see something, before you want to investigate more? Why do you enter giveaways, and what determines which ones you do or don't enter?

If it's something that interests me and I never saw before I may check it out on the first time. Maybe the second or the third.

I think when the mandatory entry gets to be too long it's tedious and I just skip it. I don't have a ton of time to be entering giveaways, I need to be in and out quickly.

I can see having a long mandatory entry if you have a high ticket item, and most people will do it. But if it's a low ticket item than what is the point?

I enter very little blog giveaways not simply because of time but normally when I do enter them they are things I want that I normally don't just go to the store and buy. Makeup (because it's expensive and I normally don't budget for it), Blog Designs (obviously can't buy at a store!) etc. I don't mind the extra steps to take to enter at all so that doesn't stop me in the least!

I don't actually usually enter giveaways for the simple fact that I'm in Canada and most giveaways are only for the US. I'm going to be holding my first giveaway on Monday, so, it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

I enter giveaways to win free stuff. Plain and simple. I only enter ones that have a prize that interests me...which mainly means something for my daughter or me to use with my daughter. She does have SPD so when I see a giveaway for something I think would work well for her I then put a lot more effort into winning ex. extra entries.

I am personally not turned off when I have to go to another website first to comment. I know it is part of the whole giveaway process.

If it is a really really cool item I will remember it the first time. But I do agree repetition is what gets me to remember it.

It seems that most the giveaways are for fun items I would not normally get to have otherwise. I stay at home and I consider anything that I win as a bonus. There are some giveaways where I know I will probably buy the item in the future but those are not nearly as common.

I hope that answers some of your questions. I am a recent follower and I just love reading your blog.

I do hold giveaways on my blog and I try to make things as simple as possible. Even I have been turned off from entering a few giveaways because there were no less then 3 steps to the mandatory entry.

Great Post!!

I am not sure how long it takes for me to sit up and take notice. But I do know that I enter giveaways when it is something that we really want and need.

I think you are pretty much spot on with this analysis, Tammy.

I would be more apt to work harder if the item I could when is worth more than say, $20.

But that is just my opinion.

It's an interesting thought but I'm as a consumer, I'm actually more turned off by a brand when I see it on dozens of blogs. To me, that shows me the company just was recognition not an actual relationship. I guess you could say it cheapens the brand in my eyes.

As for giveaway entries, I don't care how many people enter, I do care that the ones that do are genuinely interested in the product/brand and those that are, won't mind visiting the sponsor website because they would have anyways if they were that interested.

I noticed some of my giveaways get more entries than others.

If it involves a food item people seem to want it. I do some book reviews & giveaways and sadly those don't get as many entries.

I've noticed that book giveaways don't do that well, compared to others. However, I have had a book or two that really caught everyone's attention.

I f a blog has a million entries ven on something I would want I pass it by. There is a slim chance to win and if I have to do 15 entries it would take me all day.
I am passing up more blog giveaways lately because even if I would love to win the item I am spending my life doing this. Life is complicated and busy enough and if you have to do entry after entry it is so boring and time consuming that it just isn't worth it. If the giveaway is complicated I will pass it by, no matter what it is. When blogs get so huge sometimes I just see the name and pass because I know what it will entail.
The other thing is some of the sites are so slow to load, close down my computer, or take forever to put the word in, or I can't read it that it makes me want to cry. I really believe the blogs are causing me alot of stress because of the whole way most are run. Maybe not other people, but for me, it does. Giveaways did not use to be this way.
When I see someone who has giveaways and they just say leave a comment I want to say bless you! You understand!

The only ones that I tend to skip are the ones that I have to add as friends on different sites or add the blog to Google (although I have tons added).
I don't have a blog so I can't add people on a blog.
I don't mind going to different sites - I actually like to see the different sites.

If it is something I truly want to win, I will go all out with all of the entry methods. If I am sorta interested, I may do one or two entries.

I will check it out if it interests me from the very beginning. Or, if I don't have time to right then, I will definitely come back to it later. Great post :) Happy 4th of July :)

I belong to Online Sweepstakes. I almost 100% enter from there, rarely from anywhere else. I enter giveaways for anything I'm interested in winning. Since the odds are random, you never know if you might win! I have entered giveaways with only 5 other entries and lost, but have entered giveaways with thousands and won.
