Mommies Who Must Grow Wide Shoulders

Sunday, January 24, 2010

Tammy has so graciously allowed me to get to know autism better through being a guest on her blog.  But this afternoon, my blog post is geared towards Mommies in general who must grow wide shoulders to handle responsibilities normally set aside for their better halves.

I'm not a feminist by any means, not that it's a bad thing.  But I have had to do my share of learning how to grow wider shoulders.  Not necessarily physically, although since I've joined a gym, that seems to have happened as well.

Hmmmm, now that I think of it, I'm wondering if Tammy's post about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson put this idea in my head subconsciously.  How funny.  Oh, but if I did have my own wide-shouldered man at home (to give him due credit, he's got some shoulders that could rival "the Rock"'s), I would sure be appreciating his muscles.  He's off working for now and can't be my hero for the day.  I have to mentally put on his wide shoulders and be my own rescuer.

I started a wood fire in our wood stove.  I've been having trouble getting the fire to keep burning for the past week.  Now, mind you, every winter my shoulders follow the rest of my body up to the roof to clean out the chimney.  This year I put off the chore.  My husband built a new chimney topper.  It's heavy and requires some disassembling before I can clean out the fireplace.  So.......a chore I normally don't mind has become a dreaded affair.  What happens as a result of my silly trepidation?  Of course, the chimney has gotten gummed up and lost sufficient air flow.  My fire turned into a very smoke-filled home.  Sigh.  Ok, I get the message.  Stop procrastinating and just go do it.

It got me to thinking.  My husband has really shouldered some tough and unwelcome responsibilities for our family.  I've been left to take over in his absence many times over the years; so I've gotten a taste of just a tad of these responsibilities that are less than desirable.  What of all the mommies out there who don't even have the luxury of having that other person around some of the time?  At least my man can come home and help out from time to time when work permits.

So, kudos to all you mommies who have to go it alone.  God bless your wide shoulders.
