This is a reminder of how dangerous the life of a police officer is. Policemen and women are putting their lives on the line everyday. They work in a high stress and high adrenaline job. I think it is important for parents of autistic children to remember this. When we are in public with our children, we no longer have final authority over them. If there is a police officer present, you can lose your parental rights with a snap of the finger.

That is a scary thought. If your child is having a meltdown, you know how to deal with it, but a stranger doesn't. A police officer is not going to take one look at an out of control child or teenager and think "He's autistic." That is why it is important that we take time to educate our local authorities. In a big city, that is not an easy thing to do. In a small town, you may find the police department to be more receptive.

You can also carry around cards explaining that your child is autistic. When a problem comes up, you can pass out the card. It is a scary thought, thinking of your child being handcuffed and arrested. It happens, unfortunately. We need to keep in mind that the police are not the enemy. They are just doing their job. We can help our children by improving the police department personnel's understanding of autism. It is important that we do this for our children. Their safety and security should always be our top priority.
