"Duncan the Dancing Duck" written and illustrated by Syd Hoff, and published by Scholastic Inc. I loved this book. Is is appropriate for young children. The synopsis on the back of the book describes the book well.
"All Duncan wants to do is dance. He dances for everyone on the farm. Then the farmer and his wife take Duncan to the dity. Duncan becomes so famous that he gets a big show business award. Duncan is happy. But he is tired of dancing. So he goes back to the pond. And he does one last dance, just for his mother."
What the description doesn't mention, is an underlying message that I interpreted from the story. Maybe it is because I am sensitive to it because of my son. I try to find books to read that have a relative meaning for him. I found one in this book. It is subtle.
At the beginning of the book, all the other ducks laughed at him because he was dancing instead of swimming. This was an odd behavior for them to observe in another duck. When he returns to the pond, he is accepted for who he is. When we were done reading, I pointed out to my son, "He appeared to be different from the other ducks at the beginning of the story, but by the end, he was happy and everyone accepted him for who he was."
My son has been struggling with the fact that he is "different" then other children. I think that is why he loves to watch movies where the main character is different, but it all works out in the end. Books with positive messages are treasured here in my house.
I recommend this book to parents with young children. It is a delightful little story. The illustrations are nicely done. You can purchase books by Scholastic from their online store or ask your child's school if they do bookfairs with Scholastic Inc.
