I don’t go the movie theater that often. The last one I was at was Avatar. That wasn’t too long ago. My son has progressed to the point that he loves to go to the theater to watch movies. Last weekend, we went and watched the new Shrek movie in 3D. Yes, my son actually wore the glasses. I was so happy. However, there was an incident at the theater that I did not like. Imagine my shock and dismay when I discovered that I had to sit through commercials before the movie started.
I’m not talking about the picture advertisements the theater has been known to show of local businesses. I don’t like them, but I had gotten used to them. Plus, they are really short. I’m also not talking about the movie trailers that I actually enjoy watching.
No, I’m talking about real commercials. The kind you watch on television. The ones that you hit the mute button for or fast forward through if you are watching a show you recorded. I’m also not talking about just a couple. I counted and there were eight annoying commercials.
What really irritates me, is that I paid $10 a person (including my children) for a total of $40 to get into the theater to see Shrek. We get our 3-D glasses, and on the wrapping is a request that we recycle our glasses after use. They kindly provide receptacles to drop the glasses into after the movie. I didn’t recycle. We kept our glasses.
The theater charges each person and child $10 to get in. Then they make us sit through television commercials that they must make a lot of money off of to show in the theater. It’s the perfect scam perpetuated on movie goers. What are we going to do? Walk out and not watch the movie? We are hostages to our desire to watch the movie we paid money to see.
I am sad to admit that I can not think of a solution to this situation. At least, not one that does not involve boycotting the movie theater. My children would not be happy, and there are some movies that are better seen on the big screen. So, I will continue to go to the movie theater and be forced to watch commercials prior to the movie starting. I will continue to fill the pockets of the owner of the theater. I just have one thing that I have to say about this. “Shame on you for being so greedy, Mr. Theater Owner.”

They started doing that about 3-4 years ago where I live... That was the last time I went and saw a movie lol. I don't mind. They have to get you some way since people are skipping their ads and muting them at home with the case of DVR. :)
But maybe I don't mind because I don't go to the movies. LOL
I hate the ads too, they are always so loud and annoying. I only get to a theater once a year maybe so it doesn't affect my going. I prefer just the movie previews.
I noticed that too. I also saw Shrek in 3D. It was annoying, I was thinking start the movie already.
I like the commercials because they give me time to be late. :) I never really viewed them obnoxious or scammy. I figure it's just capitalism. They won't bother me unless they start breaking and showing commercials in the middle of the movie. That's be irritating. ;)
We hardly ever go to the movies, but where we live commercials have been in front of movies for a few years already. Movie Theaters make very little money on the movies the first couple of weeks they are shown in the theater, almost all the ticket revenue is sent back to the movie studio, so I guess they need to make money where they can or your ticket prices will just keep going up.
I'm never on time to anything so by the time we get to the movie theater and get seated, all that has already played through :)
My advice: get to the movie about 15 minutes late. You'll never know what came before the movie LOL
Yeah, they've been doing that for a few years here too. I think the first one was Coke or something. I was taken back at first but now just consider it normal.
I remember commercials in theaters even when i was a girl - for cigarettes. I find them tedious, but the theaters have to make money otherwise tickets would be even more expensive.
I have to admit, I haven't been to the movie theater in years. But, I'm sure the commercials would irritate me too. They make plenty of money (especially with the rising cost of tickets) that I don't see it as necessary.
I'll stick to the drive-ins, where there's no commercials, and I don't have to constantly hush my 5 year old!

WOW u paid $10 per person That's sweet!! For 3 of us it was almost $40!! No pop or popcorn. I swear they raised the prices yet again
We saved our glasses one time to wear to the next 3D we went to and they told us we still had to pay the glasses fee...
I think maybe every theater is doing commercials now? I just ignore them and talk to whoever I am with :)
We just go late so we don't have to sit through the commercials...well, we did when we went to the movies, anyway...they started that on Long Island at least five years ago...my son is five and we've only been to the movies twice since he was born. :)
