Are You Modeling Bad Behavior To Your Child?

Thursday, March 18, 2010

We all have our bad habits. Things that we say or do everyday. Things we don't want our children repeating. Unfortunately, monkey see, monkey do, or in our case, child sees, child does. I am reminded of that everyday with my 6 1/2 year old daughter. She picks up on everything, good and bad.

I feel so proud of her when I see her demonstrating good behaviors that she has picked up from me. I feel so bad when I see her say or do something not so good, and that behavior was picked up from me. Having a young child can sometimes be like looking in a mirror. You may not realize that you do something, until you observe your child doing it.

My daughter has picked up my sarcasm, eye rolling, hand in the air, and ability to argue. She has an attitude that drives me crazy. Not all of it comes from me. She has behaviors that she picks up from television and from school. It's an everyday struggle with her. I almost feel like I am in an endless tug of war with my daughter for control.

I am determined to be the adult in this relationship. I am determined to try to be a calm and rationale adult. It's not easy. There are times when I just have to walk away (in comes my bad behavior of eye rolling and hand in the air. Did I mention my tendency to say "Whateve," sarcastically? ) Alright, I admit it. I am not the perfect mom. I try, but I am human. I love my children and I will continue working on my flaws. I will do my best to correct the bad habits that they have learned from me and to demonstrate good behaviors in the future.

What kind of bad habits have your children learned from you?

My son is turning 4 in May and I must say he is a copy cat. He imitates everything he sees in his playmates and the expressions and mannerisms from mom and dad. Sometimes when he gets too difficult, he wouldn't say what he wants but will just ignore me. Out of desperation I'd say sarcastically "Never mind!" And one day he wanted to eat cheese and I told him to wash his hands first. Normally he would do as he's told to get what he wants, but that time he was tough and said "Never mind" and then turned around mad. I got offended ;-)

And bad thing is, it doesn't get better. My son is 19 and today he has an attitude that mimics mine at that age... not pretty!

OMG! That's me and my 8yo daughter to a tee. I too try to stay level headed, mature, and not engage in an argument (it takes 2 to tango) with her, but it's hard. I feel your struggle.

Ever catch your kid "bossing" other people? My precocious 9 yr old does that a lot- sounding like a mini me, telling him what to do.
