The Online Medieval War Game Evony

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Yesterday, I mentioned the online game Evony. I also mentioned that I spend a lot of time on it. I do. I admit it. I spend a lot of time on the computer working on my blog. In between tasks, I can click over to the game and do something, then go back and complete my next blog related task.

I would like to take this opportunity to explain to you what Evony is and why I like it. I used play Facebook games (Mafia Wars, Farm Town, Bejeweled), but they quickly became boring. What I like about Evony is that things change from day to day. You are playing against people who’s decisions can have a big impact on that you do.

Let me back track a bit, and explain the game. Evony is a medieval warfare game. You have to build a city from scratch, increase and train your troops, and acquire resources. You can attack other player’s cities or attack barbarian cities. Attacking a Barbarian City is usually done to collect resources and experience for your heroes. When you attack another player’s city, you may not be up against just that player. If the player is in an alliance, you are putting yourself up against all of the members of that alliance.

Alliances are key to this game. You have to be in a supportive alliance, and you need your alliance to be friends with some other big alliances. Members of the same alliance can reinforce each other’s cities, share resources, and coordinate joint attacks on enemy alliances.

I don’t spend a lot of time on this game during the week. Most of my time is spent home schooling, going to appointments, cooking, cleaning, and working on my blog. I do tend to keep myself logged in during the day. This is to allow me the ability to check in and do something, then I can go back to something else. This past weekend was a different story. I had to delver Girl Scout cookies to the mothers in my daughter’s troop. The battery in the truck died, and my husband had to come get us.

Once I got home, I spent the rest of the day in war mode. I was fighting enemy cities. I has the computer and was not turning it over to my husband. He wasn’t happy. Sunday, I spent a little time in the morning defending other alliance members. Then I went back to war. I loved it. What I did had an impact on another player.

I attacked a city a few times and his alliance members threatened me. Big mistake. If they had nicely asked me to stop, I would have considered. I was threatened to stop or be destroyed. I didn’t stop. Several of them launched an attack on me. Fortunately, their cities were not close by and I had time to get reinforcement troops from another alliance member of mine. My attackers scouted my city before their attack hit and saw the reinforcements. They recalled their troops. The city I was attacking went into truce mode. If you have a Truce in your item supply list, it can be used to put your city in truce mode. No one can attack you for 12 hours and you can not attack anyone during that time, either.

Soon, I teleported back to my home country and was mostly done for the day. I had to do a Girl Scout Booth with my daughter. I had things to do around the house. I checked in here and there, to work on rebuilding troops and resources lost during war. This game might not be your cup of tea, but I like it. By the way, that is not a screen shot of my city. It's a screen shot from the tutorial. If you want to find me online at Evony, my lord name is Taless and I can be found on server 101.

This is addictive. I think it is better than Facebook games. You can do a lot more.
