Comment Left Saying Smoking and Drugs Cause Autism

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Yesterday, Sara Forhetz with KY3.com, reported on Governor Jay Nixon Missouri, spoke out about autism and the lack of insurance coverage for autism treatments. “Gov. Jay Nixon spoke extensively about autism and the lack of coverage in his State of the State address last week” Finally, someone is taking an active interest in helping families raising an autistic child. Now, we need more Governors to become active.

What really hit me about this article was a comment that was left on it. It reminds me of how much we still need to do to raise awareness of autism. It also illustrates what we are up against. People with narrow minds, taking it upon themselves to chime in on autism. People that don’t know a thing about what caused autism or how it should be treated. Here is the quote:

“As long as these young gals and guys smoke, drink, take drugs before and after they have a kid theres going to be problems. Sure make the insurance companies pay for something that was never covered before, now your going to make the insurance company raise rates for everybody then your going to say that the insurance companies are bad there ripping everbody off thats happens when Goverment makes laws that cost other people or busness Money. No you couldnt have a option or rider on your policy if you want coverage pay for it, no they want everybody in the State that is trying to find affordable insurance to keep there family heathly and alive is going to either get less insurance or no insurance becouse the State wants to cure everybodys problem. Its same as you cant afford a down payment on a car you get the tax payers to give it you. AKA cash for clunkers.”

First, come on, if you are going to leave a comment about a subject this important, check you spelling. It really just goes to prove how ignorant you are. You are small minded, ignorant, (yes, I’m going to use the f-bomb on my blog) fuck face and obviously have no sense of morality or sympathy for anyone that isn’t looking back at you from a mirror. You live in your own world and look out upon everyone and spew your garbage from your mouth and on the internet.

As a parent of an autistic child, I think you are pathetic. I pray to God that you do not have any children. You are a poor excuse for a human being and you should crawl back under the rock you came out of.

I have to agree with you. I have NEVER smoked in my life, and I never ate healthier or took better care of myself as when I was pregnant with my oldest. Junk food and fatty foods made my physically ill when pregnant with him, yet he was just diagnosed with Asperger's. That person's comment was so ignorant it's beyond belief. For all intents and purposes, I had a "normal" life before pregnancy, a "normal" pregnancy, and we were considered a "normal" family afterwards. There was nothing to indicate that our baby would have something fundamentally wrong with him. GAH! That's as bad as the people who think we are just bad parents with an out of control child until we tell them he has a label and we're really working on it. Then all of a sudden, it's ok.

How ignorant and insensitive. Three of my sister's four kids have autism and has never smoked or done drugs in her life. She also rarely drinks and has a glass of wine MAYBE once a year. She took care of herself during her pregnancies and all but the last one were planned. What an ass.

It's awful how ignorant and cruel some people can be.

Emilie- I'm like your sister, I have one glass of wine a year, maybe. I don't think I got my one glass last year. LOL.

I'm sorry you had to deal with a comment like that; how sad. We have enough to deal with as parents of these special children then try to educate everyone; especially those who have already formed their opinions based on nothing.

I don't drink or smoke & barely take an over the counter for pain but still have spectrum children; two severe. We even eat organically & keep their diets clean.

Wonder how much that commenter does things like that?

You know, unfortunately some have to learn the hard way. The best we can do is pray for the person's soul & move on.

That just blows my mind... I bet that commenter is fully willing to pay for better cancer benefits though.. which has been proven to be caused by smoking among other things.

I don't care what others think, Autism is hereditary.. I don't mean that mom had it and then the child got it. I mean along the lines of Uncle Bill was quirky and then little Sammy was born on the specturm. I am one of those believers though that believe the high rates of diagnosed spectrum disorders is because of all the chemicals in our foods.

Anyhow. The misinformed will always be a thorn in your side. All we can do is pray to God to accept the things that we cannot change.

Yes, the commenter is obviously an ignorant person that thinks they have all the answers. And, I'm sure there are many more like him/her out there. But, why resort to name-calling? It only brings you down to their level.

COMPLETE B.S.!!! It really sounds like that was some bored 14 year old that has been listening to tid bits of conversations from parents and news stations and doesn't know whether to scratch his watch or wind his butt. People like that annoy the crap out of me! *sigh*

What an idiot. It's like saying that vaccinations cause Autism, Asperger's or ADHD...if that were true ALL children would get those diseases.

Unfortunately, some people are just genetically predisposed to having certain illnesses. Like cancer, diabetes, heart disease....it's genetic. A counselor once told my best friend that her twins' ADHD was caused by drug use. Uh, huh. There is no way that could be true and it is a well known scientific fact that twins are more likely to have ADD or ADHD than single births. This person also didn't take into account the fact that my friend was in fact ADD herself, but undiagnosed. (They didn't have a name for it back in the stone ages)

I do believe that all the extra preservatives/chemicals in our food and the prevalence of fast food in children's diets does cause certain "illnesses" to be more prevalent now. Look at how many little girls are starting puberty at age 8! But as for autism being a purely preventable disease...uh, check your facts before your type. Sometimes things just happen.

I just love how the internet allows every idiot to publish their inaccurate drivel.

Yet another uneducated big mouth spewing their idiocy. At least the majority of people are beginning to understand autism.

My daughter has sensory processing issues which have caused a rather significant delay in her speech. Explaining that can be a nightmare.

That's why we're out there writing about it, hon. Even if we have to educate one person at a time. Autism is not caused by smoking and drinking.

I know why people say things like this. They like to feel they have control over their lives. That bad things won't happen to them as long as they do certain things.

But as every mom of a special needs child knows ... that's not how life works.

Mr or Ms Dis-Informed may be surprised by what the health care package that is now written has in it...
most likely higher taxes and not much to help the uninsured, and penalize the ones who may be blessed to have it. It needs a major overhaul, but make it about helping those that do not have coverage & need special help, and not hurt the companies that provide or help pay for insurance for their employees...

and his remark about cash 4 clunkers.. that was a big mistake,it was not for people who needed help getting a car, the ones that used it mostly had tons of money & where upgrading anyway & paid with cash ( which is how they qualified for the top amount of $ for their so called clunker)... talk with any dealers, many of who are still waiting for the money to be paid to them they already handed out...

Help & education is what we as a community try to do. And it is the little ones who get left behind & hurt...
and the ignorant that make the mess all the worse...

more Government... no we need less of it, and watch the ones in power who have other ideas hidden in their heads...

sorry you had to be insulted by such a moron!

When I got pregnat I took the best care of myself as I could. I am so tired of ignorant people. We as parents with those who have children with autism are fighting such an up hill battle.
