AVATAR The Movie Is a Big Hit

Sunday, December 20, 2009

Yesterday was my anniversary. My husband wanted to make the day special for us, even though we had to have the kids with us all day. There was no one to watch them while we went off and did something alone. My 10 year old son wanted to go see the new movie Avatar. My daughter, 6 years old, wanted to go too. I really didn’t think she would like it. I wasn’t sure about my son.

We ate breakfast before going to the movie theater. Because of this, we didn’t get popcorn or sodas. Usually, we have to get them so that my son will sit through a movie. As long as he is eating popcorn, he doesn’t have a problem sitting through a movie. If he runs out before the movie is over, then we have a problem. There have been many times that we have had to leave before the end of a movie.

I was right about my daughter’s reaction. She didn’t want to be there. She was seat and lap hopping the whole time. My son actually surprised me. He loved the movie. His eyes were glued to the screen. The special effects were great. The bright colors, flying animals and the characters all caught and held his attention. Every time I looked over at him, he was clearly enjoying himself.

There were a couple of violent scenes that I was worried about my kids watching. I covered my daughter’s eyes for a couple of scenes. I was also worried about my son’s reaction to watching some of the animals in the movie being killed. He is very sensitive about that and has been known to refuse to watch a movie after watching one scene with violence against an animal. Even if it is a cartoon that I new he would love if he watched the whole thing. It was alright. He continued to watch and didn’t get upset.

It’s official. My little boy is growing up. This is the first movie that isn’t rated G he has really liked. I am glad that he had the chance to see it on the big screen. I’ve also noticed that his taste in music has changed, too. He is pulling away from the country music that he loved over every other type of music. He is now listening to all the other types of music. He watches a lot of VH1 on television, too. I am happy for him, but it makes me a little sad, too.

One hopes that you explained to your kids that it's illegal to harm an animal, especially for film, and that anything of that nature that occurs in the film is done using either CGI (Computers) or Models.

It's important that as kids pass by the G certificate, they increase their understanding of the borders between reality and fiction.

My kids know the difference. I have explained it to them. They understand the difference between fiction and reality.

I am glad your son had fun! You are an awesome mom and I am sure it was a special day!

My husband took my 3.5 year old to see it. My son was enthralled and came home talking about the robots, animals ... and gummy bears he got to eat. And hubby had fun too!

BTW, my son also knows it's not appropriate to harm animals and what make-believe is. Kids are excellent at understanding make-believe - probably more-so than adults.

That is really fantastic that he could watch the whole movie and not get upset with the animal scences. I know Dakota would have a hard time with that as he is sensitive like that too. He will not ever watch Marley and Me ever again. I am glad that you all had a good time. Happy Anniversary!
