Today, I'm curious as to what some of your children's favorite things are. The photo with this blog post is my wonderful teen posing in three of her favorite things. One is taking photos, the other is dressing up. She likes skulls, too. I don't know why. I suppose it is just a phase. I know I went through a phase when I was younger that included unicorns! Each to his or her own.I think special needs children must have favorites that seem more important to them than favorites would seem to other children. Maybe it helps them stay calm, maybe it helps them laugh, maybe it perks up sad spirits. Whatever the case may be, please share some of your child/ children's favorites with us.
I remember when my now-grown-and-married son was a young child. He went through phases where he would have a special favorite stuffed animal. This would last for months, then he would change his preference. We went through a pink elephant, a large stuffed dog, a stuffed monkey, a favorite blanket, and a small stuffed donkey, to name a few. But whatever it was, it had to be in his possession wherever we would go until he decided the time was up. It was such a small thing to honor, and it gave him peace of mind.
Some Moms tend to worry or become exasperated when their child chooses a "must-have" favorite item or a must-have activity. It can become a pain sometimes, but the mental and emotional security it gives the child is well worth the little bit of frustration we may endure.

His ride on cars. He has these little toddler ride on cars (that he has outgrown of course) that he still loves to ride on around the house.. and crash into things. *L*
He also loves.. YES more cars.. his toy cars. He loves to pretend to drive them around up and down the walls and all over making car sounds..
And.. His POWER WHEEL car.. he loves that thing more then anything else and will drive it all around the yard all summer long for hours on end giving his sisters rides. Of course it is now put away for the winter months.. which makes him heart broken
And lastly.. his vibrating teddy. It is his comfort item and he will hold it when he is sad, mad.. or just chilling watching TV. The bear vibrates when you hug him.. and I think it helps with his sensory needs. He loves to snuggle it when he sleeps too.
My six year old has Aspergers and some of his favorite things have a calming effect on him.
He loves his jump start computer games and Sonic. He loves it so much that when he has so many time outs or tells his teacher no at school, he doesn't get to play his favorite games. We just started this behavior plan with his teachers a month or so ago. Now, he comes home celebrating his days without time outs.
He also loves character pillows, play food especially crabby patties, robots, and dinosaurs. He loves his Imaginext dinosaur sets and his brother's Batcave. He loves little figures he can hold in his hand. He's so good at pretend play especially with other children.
He goes through phases sometimes too. One day, he'll be obsessing over Pokemon cartoons. The next, he'll want to read every book with Max and Ruby on it.
It took our little guy so long to have interests or to show us his interests that we seem to celebrate everything he shows interest in. He's got such a little personality. We've waited so long to see it because he was mostly non-verbal and prone to breakdowns. He's made such wonderful progress.
