Caterpillar Inc Ruins a 2nd Christmas

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Last year, we found out just before Christmas that my husband would have the whole month of January off. He works for Caterpillar Inc. They closed the plant down because of lack of orders. Because of this, we had to be very careful how we spent money for Christmas. My husband did get unemployment, but it was less than what he regularly made.

He went back to work in February, only to be told that come March, they would be going to a two week on and two week off work schedule. It didn’t end there. As the year went on, the 40 hour weeks that they were working when working, became 32 hour weeks. Just recently, they have gone back to working every week. The weeks, though, were still 32 hour weeks.

Now, we are facing a pay cut of $3 an hour. This is supposed to be an across the board pay cut. It is supposed to affect everyone. It starts in December with $1 an hour cut in pay. January and February will each see a $1 an hour pay cut. With each pay cut, we will be getting a small bonus check. Not only will this bonus check be small, but it will be heavily taxed, making it smaller. The way I look at it, I will at least be able to buy groceries with it for the month.

Needless to say, Christmas this year will be difficult. We are getting by with next to nothing, but thanks to our credit card, our basic needs are being met. I understand that the economy is hard and that companies have to make cut backs. What I don’t understand is why upper management is scheduled to get a huge bonus check when it looks like the regular employees will be losing their meager yearly bonus checks. Word has it that there is an email going around the company stating that upper management was getting a bigger bonus than usual. Is this correct? I don’t know, but it is believed to be so by employees, including middle management. Merry Christmas to Caterpillar Inc.

That is strange. Where my hubby works upper management gets no bonus...there are raises for everyone else ... super small but something. The same thing happened where I used to work, in hard times upper management would get the shaft. Sucks for us in this instance, since DH is upper management. LMAO. But I am sure others appreciate it.

I wish I could say this all surprises me, but it doesn't. My husband left working for a shady gov't contracted company last year to go back to active duty Army full time because he was tired of getting the shaft, and doing the same work as the guys on active duty for half the pay and 1/4 the benefits.

I am so sorry!

My husband owns his own company with his brother and they just laid off all their employees except 2 last month. I feel so badly for those people (luckily none of them have children and one that we kept does).

It will be a super tight Christmas for us because unlike Cat neither my husband nor his brother have been taking home a paycheck for the past month and we even had to pay the company money to keep the doors open. I am praising the Lord that he has provided for us so far and I pray that he takes care of you too!

On the bright side your family has time to plan for these cuts and is it possible either of you can take on a part time seasonal job?

Have you looked into about.com or suite.com

I found a site yesterday www.getafreelancer.com there are many writing jobs there. I am considering signing up, have to think of an anon ID.

Good luck - I am using the latest amazon certs I have for holidays and that is all we have. I been using a payday loan place since Sep when I had to get new brakes, now in this cycle till income tax refund.
