Developing New Daily Living Skills

It's great when my son masters a new daily living skill. I do the proud mommy dance every time it happens. Last week, my son mastered getting ice and water from the refrigerator door. This may seem like a simple thing for other moms, but for me, it was a huge accomplishment. It gives my son a little more independence. He can now get his own drink when he is thirsty.

Now, I have learned that there are some skills that have a down side. This is one of them. My son likes to fill his cup up to the top with ice and water. This leads to water and ice on the floor in front of the refrigerator. He has started picking the ice up off of the floor and putting it in the sink. The water, well, I usually end up stepping in it.

He also loves to use my big, 16 ounce plastic cups. He loves drinking ice water constantly. All of this intake of fluids has the obvious side effect. He was doing so good about staying dry during the night. Now, his bed wetting has increased tremendously. He has also started to have accidents in the evening.

I can't get too upset with him. We just have to get him to understand that just because he can now go and get his own water, he doesn't have to constantly do it. I think the newness of this learned skill is settling down. He hasn't been getting as much water to drink over the last couple of days. His bed wetting and accidents have been getting better.

Sometimes, adjustments need to be made when a new skill is learned. I have to be careful not to discourage him and yet teach him the correct way to use his new skill. It definitely makes life interesting. I wouldn't have it any other way.

If you figure out a solution to the spilled water and ice, let me know. My kids spill all the time (and usually don't even pick up the ice). I think they think the dog will get it (he doesn't).

And I thought the worst of it would be cups full of ice water littering the house.

I haven't found a solution to the spilled water. I have been stepping on water all night, tonight. He fills his cups up to overflowing and leaves a trail of ice and water wherever he goes.

My son does this exact same thing. The ice has to be over the top of the cup, the water all the way to the top and he adds a straw. I finally got him to put the dropped ice cubes in the sink instead of his cup. And he even wipes up his water spills. But he is still having accidents.
