VTech’s newest product is on the shelves. It is the Bugsby Reading System. Bugsby the Bookworm is a sensory pen that is designed to use with a new series of books from VTech. When you purchase the pen, you also get one book in it. The sensory pen takes 2 “AAA” batteries. The batteries that come with the pen are temporary or display batteries. You will want to purchase full term batteries when you purchase the Bugsby Reading System.
Each book comes with a small cartridge that you place into the Busby the Bookworm pen. The cartiridge is stored in the book, which is a feature that I love. It makes keeping up with the cartridges easier. With each book, your child can have the pen read the story while she follows along. She can also use it to play games that are designed to build her recognition of the spoken and written words. The whole system is very convenient for moms and children. Both the pen and the books are easy to carry around. I made sure that my daughter understood immediately that the cartridge needs to go back into the book when she is finished.
Vtech sent me the Bugsby Reading System and two additional books to review with my daughter. Two of the books were Bugsby the Bookworm stories and the third was a Wonder Pets story. I did see some books at my local Wal-Mart and I noticed that they also have a Dora the Explorer story. book My son is too old for these. The suggested age range for this product is 3 years to 8 years, depending on the book. I did notice two problems with the pen. One was that the pen would freeze up if your child takes the cartridge out when the Bugsby is still reading. This is an easy fix, though. There is a tiny reset button on the pen. The tip of a pen or pencil can be used to push the little button and reset the pen.
The second issue I have with the Bugsby Reading System is taking the little cartridge out of the pen. Putting the cartridge in is easy. I had a little trouble getting it out of the pen and my daughter struggles with it, too. Once I got the hang of it, it was fine. Although, my daughter is still trying to get the hang of getting the cartridge out.
I think VTech’s latest product will be a success. I like that it is educational and that there is a nice variety of story books that you can purchase to use with it. The sensory pen with one story book costs about $30. Each additional book is approximately $13. When you consider the pricing on other reading systems, these are pretty good. I also had the opportunity to watch my daughter use this with other children her age.
At a family get together, my daughter and the other two girls her age that were there played with Bugsby together. They were sitting in a circle taking turns with the Bugsby sensory pen. I enjoyed watching the three of them interact, learning, and having fun. It was like they were in their own little world and I was just peeking in. All things considered, I think VTech has done a great job with their latest product. I will be buying some more books for my daughter. Christmas will be here before we know it, and I know she will love to have more books to use with her Bugsby the Bookworm.
